This will be a workshop where everyone will be working, at their own pace, on their lace pillow, on a type of lace that they want to study.  In order for this to work smoothly, you will need to consult with  Kumiko ahead of the workshop so that you can have your pattern picked out, know the kind and size of thread you will need, the number of bobbins you will need to have wound for the project.   In the past, Kumiko arrived in Lansing about 10 days before the workshop, so participants were able to consult with her prior to the workshop.   We don’t know at this point when Kumiko will be arriving but we expect it will not be as early as in the past.  Stay tuned on this subject until we hear from our teacher.  If you know what pattern you want to work on, then you can go ahead and wind bobbins with the proper sized thread.

Kumiko is willing to teach: Chrysanthemum, Florentine,  Bloemwork,  Beveren,  Chantilly,  Duchesse, Flanders,  Binche.

By August 1, you must notify Penney of the type of lace you want to study so she can make certain that Kumiko brings the correct patterns with her when she comes from Japan.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ALL WORKSHOPS

This year the CALM workshops will take place at the Staybridge Suites in Okemos.  Their telephone number is 517-347-3044.  Lunch will be provided each day of the workshops; the hotel offers a complimentary breakfast buffet.  All other meals are on your own.  The hotel has a 24-hour gourmet coffee bar available and we will have tea available too.  Once the number of registered students exceeds the number of available seats at the workshop, a waiting list will be created in case there are cancellations.  If you need to cancel your registration in a workshop, there will be no refund unless there is someone who can take your place in the class.

Please let Penney know if you have any dietary restrictions so she can plan accordingly for each day’s lunch options.

If you would like to become a member of CALM you may pay the $25.00 fee (which includes the late fee of $15—dues are to be submitted by March 1st) and sign up for the members-only price for the workshop.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS

The Staybridge Suites are offering workshop participants a reduced rate for their suites.  The suites available include the following:

Studio suite—one queen bed, pull out couch and kitchen $139/night

One bedroom suite—2 queen beds, pull out couch and kitchen $159/night

When you call for reservations let them know you’re attending the CALM workshop in order to receive your discounted rate.  Alicia Goodman is our contact for the workshop if you need additional information.

Mary Lou has offered to house several participants in the past but she will only be able to accommodate the instructor and her assistant from Japan and possibly one other participant.  We regret any inconvenience this causes.  We hope that this hotel option will work well for you this year.

ALL WORKSHOPS ARE SCENT FREE

Several of our workshop participants have problems with allergies.  We ask that you do not use perfume, cologne, scented hairspray, hand lotion, or fabric sheets used in the drier with your clothes.  Clothing that smells of cigarette smoke is also a problem.  For those who have new straw/grass pillows, please don’t plan to use them at any workshop.  Any of the aforementioned substances can cause severe allergic reactions for some of our members – and in some cases, for the teachers.  Thank you, in advance for your adherence to this request.
